Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, the leading hospital complex in Catalonia is one of the largest in Spain with a total of more than 1400 beds and by means of its Research Institute (VHIR) is a leader centre in biomedical research at a national and European scope. PROSICS Barcelona is a functional program on Tropical Medicine and International Health recently created by the Catalan Public Health Care System (ICS). It Represents the addition of the existing centres in Barcelona (Tropical Medicine and International Health Unit at the University Hospital Vall d’Hebron and Tropical Medicine and International Health Unit at Drassanes).

Specific task in the project

ICS-HUVH is the coordinator of the proposal, and will lead its management, a part from the map treatment, and the organization of the clinical trials.

Expertise relevant to the proposed work

The main research lines are related to Tuberculosis, Malaria and hemoflagellates (leishmaniosis and Chagas disease). Related to Chagas disease, we have a solid research trajectory on new therapeutic options. We are conducting the first clinical trial with posaconazol in humans. Moreover we are involved in other European Project (iNTER Support Action International Network of Teleconsultation Excellence & Referral, Grant Agreement number: 223610 Project acronym: iSA) and with new bioengineering procedures applied on tropical diseases (nano-vectors for drug delivery against malaria). HUVH is an expert in clinical trial, and has a unit only dedicated to the service and tasks related for Clinical trials in the hospital (UCICAC)

Dr Israel Molina: Responsible of Tropical Medicine and International Health Unit at the University Hospital Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, Spain. Professor at Tropical Medicine Master of the University of Barcelona. Coordinator of the Infectious Disease Module of the Tropical Medicine and International Health Diploma of the UAB.
